Digital banking only "scares" the old

By Lavdrim Lita

On a typical afternoon, while browsing online on my phone, I came across an ad for Jet Bank. I clicked on it and downloaded the app. The whole journey started as a casual exploration but quickly turned into a curiosity to see what an online bank looks like in its architecture and freedom to move capital from the comfort of one's home.

Jet Bank is the first 100% digital bank in Albania, which operates without physical branches and offers financial services through intelligent platforms. Licensed by the Bank of Albania, it aims to bring a new banking model, supported by modern technology, automation and simpler access to financial products and services for citizens.

Like any innovation entering a traditional market, Jet Bank has been accompanied by great public interest and discussions about its business model and ownership structure. This is a dynamic that often accompanies innovative projects, especially in sensitive sectors such as finance.

The bank's licensing process has been developed in accordance with the legal and regulatory requirements of the Bank of Albania, going through the procedures foreseen for the authorization of a banking institution. In a sector where trust is the foundation of every relationship with the client, these processes have been created precisely to guarantee transparency, integrity and the fulfillment of the necessary standards.

In fact, the presence of international capital in the banking sector is not a new phenomenon for Albania. Since the establishment of the Bank of Albania in 1925, Italian, Belgian and Yugoslav investors have participated in addition to Albanian capital. Even today, the Albanian banking system is dominated by banks with international capital, while the free movement of capital constitutes one of the fundamental principles of the European market.

There are dozens of fully digital banks operating on similar models in Europe, such as Revolut, Monzo, Starling Bank and N26. These institutions have changed the way millions of citizens conduct financial services, moving banking from the counter to their mobile phones. Jet Bank aims to bring a similar model, adapted for the Albanian market and, in the future, for Albanian communities in the region and beyond.

Digital banks are built on high standards of technological security and regulatory oversight. Jet Bank also relies on international platforms and partners such as Backbase, Oracle Flexcube, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Cloudflare, Mastercard and Jumio, technologies that are widely used by financial institutions around the world.

Jet Bank is led by Fatbardha Rino, a professional with over two decades of experience in the Albanian banking sector. Her experience in leadership roles and in developing digital transformation processes is one of the elements on which the bank's vision to bring a new way of providing financial services in Albania is based.

Market interest is also reflected in the high number of citizens who have registered on the waiting list to open accounts, indicating that there is a real demand for simpler, faster and more accessible banking models.

Jet Bank's business model is oriented towards a fully digital experience. Customers will be able to access bank accounts, deposits, loans, electronic payments domestically and internationally, transfers and other financial products through the application, reducing the need for physical procedures and gradually promoting a less cash-intensive economy.

Jet Bank received its license from the Bank of Albania on March 25, 2026, making history in the Albanian banking sector as the first fully digital bank in the country. The institution is currently in the pre-testing phase, where the platform is being used by a limited group of users to test the functionalities and customer experience before fully opening to the public.

Digital transformation is no longer a concept of the future, but a reality that is changing the way modern economies function. The Albanian banking sector is also part of this transformation. In this sense, the arrival of a fully digital bank should not be seen simply as the entry of a new player into the market, but as an indicator that Albania is also becoming part of an evolution that has been changing the financial landscape in Europe for years.
