The European Union has warned that it may fine, suspend or even ban social media platform X if it does not comply with EU rules, announced Stephane Sejourne, Executive Vice President of the European Commission.
In an interview with France Inter, Sejourne stressed that the European Commission has a clear set of rules that must be implemented by social media platforms, including X, formerly known as Twitter.
He recalled that Commissioner Hena Virkunen had expanded the investigation against Elon Musk, the owner of the platform, due to concerns about compliance with EU regulations.
Sejourne stressed that the commissioner's report will take into account all recent developments, including Musk's political interventions in Europe, following the support he has expressed for the far-right Alternative for Germany.
"The sanctions could be very strong and reach up to billions of euros. Ultimately, this could lead to a ban on Platform X," Sejourne said.
This warning demonstrates the EU's commitment to ensuring that social media platforms respect the rules of transparency, security and freedom of expression, as well as to avoid unwanted political influence. (A2 Televizion)
