Kentucky under water, 8 dead from flooding in the US

At least eight people have died from flooding in the state of Kentucky, Governor Andy Beshear said on Sunday.

Powerful storms and torrential rains covered roads and caused flooding, forcing the evacuation of stranded people.

Gov. Beshear said many of the deaths, including a mother and her 7-year-old child, were caused by cars getting stuck on flooded roads. He said rescue operations were still ongoing and power was out for about 39,000 homes, warning that strong winds could damage the power grid.

Much of the United States is experiencing another wave of severe winter weather with torrential rains that have caused flooding.

A mother and her 7-year-old child died in Kentucky when the car they were traveling in was trapped by high water in Hart County. In southeastern Kentucky, a 73-year-old man was found dead in floodwaters in Clay County, officials said.

Freezing temperatures, around -30 degrees Celsius, are expected in other parts of the United States near the Canadian border. In the Dakotas and Minnesota, temperatures are expected to drop between -40 degrees Celsius and -45.6 degrees Celsius.

Heavy snowfall is also expected in northeastern New York, while wind speeds could reach up to 60 miles per hour. (A2 Televizion)
